Fact-check: Social media user claims Ebaaba is giving out free laptops through an online link

A message circulating online under the username Mariama Sonko on Facebook, which can be found here, claims to offer laptops at an unreasonable cost of D850, saying that the laptops can be obtained for free if users follow a link provided in the post. We have found that this claim is false and intended to mislead the public. The user also claims to have worked for Ebaaba for more than two years and alleges that she was fired for helping people access these laptops. Our team of researchers reached out to Ebaaba, an e-commerce website and virtual shopping mall, headquartered in the Gambia that allows vendors to sell their products, and they confirmed that the person who made this post has never worked with them and that the claim is a scam.

This is not the first time such deceptive content has circulated online. A number of individuals continue to share fake links under the guise of giving away free items. We urge everyone to be vigilant and avoid falling for such scams, as offers like these are rarely genuine. Always verify any link shared with you or encountered online before forwarding it to others. Doing so helps reduce the spread of false and misleading information, especially on social media.
The claim of a free laptop offer is false and misleading. The person who posted it is not, and has never been, an employee of Ebaaba as claimed. Be cautious about the information you come across online to protect yourself and our society from the harm of misinformation. Always verify before you share.
